When I was thinking about what to write for this first blog post, I had far too many ideas.
I wanted it to be interesting and informative, but also not to jump headlong into the subject matter.

So it needed to be something introductory, but interesting enough to make you - the reader - want to come back again.
Hmm, what would impress you?

Small business is important to our nation’s economy. You probably know these statistics:

• Small business in NZ represented 97% of enterprises (just under half a million enterprises) in Feb 2016 1
• Approximately a quarter of businesses close within three years 2
• ​Up to 48% of small businesses born in 2010 had ceased by 2016 1

Here are some statistics that you might not know:

• According to Dun & Bradstreet in 2014, 90% of small business fail due to poor cashflow 3
• The Bank of America released a paper in 2015 identifying that businesses planning their cash flows annually had only a 36% survival rate, with those doing monthly cash flows having an 80% survival rate 4
• A business that produces financial reports annually has a 36% chance of survival, but a business that produces financial reports monthly has a near 80% chance of survival 5

Knowing your financial situation is one of the keys to business survival but how many people claim that they don’t understand their business finance - or worse, are scared of it?

In my experience, most people’s understanding of finance and accountancy is limited to their cash/bank balance and their tax returns (completed by their financial accountant). But there is so much more to it, and it’s not all complex and complicated.
